The movie
During a year, they would meet and film each other. The filmmaker and the actor, the President and his prime minister, Alain Cavalier and Vincent Lindon. In Pater, you will see them in real life and in the fiction that they invented together.
ADDITIONAL NOTE
The film premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival on 17 May. It was well received, with a twenty-minute standing ovation.
Pascal Mérigeau of Le Nouvel Observateur described Pater as “the most unusual film in the history of the Cannes Festival”. For him, the film’s originality lies in the fact that the boundaries between documentary and fiction are abolished: ‘[…] from one scene to the next, and sometimes even from one line to the next, Alain Cavalier can become Alain Cavalier again and Vincent Lindon can find himself in the skin of Vincent Lindon. You could say that they act, but that would be reductive, because they also film each other, alternately or together, they invent their dialogues, Vincent Lindon speaks and the president answers, or Alain Cavalier speaks and the prime minister starts again.
